Summary Of The Book

Mukunda Lal Ghosh, as the yogi was called before he became an ascetic, was inclined towards the spiritual path from a young age. He found the teacher he sought in Sri Yukteswar, who was himself a disciple of the great Lahiri Mahasaya.

Autobiography Of A Yogi (Hindi) traces the life history of the man who was known to the world as Paramahamsa Yogananda. Though his family tried to dissuade him, he took on the vows of an ascetic at a young age and decided to spread the message of yoga and spirituality to the world.
He set up a school that integrated yoga practices into modern education, at Ranchi. This school later became the base for an international organization known as Yogoda Satsanga in India and the Self-Realization Fellowship elsewhere.

Paramahansa Yogananda traveled to the United States of America to participate in a religious congress, and stayed in that country for 15 years, spreading the message of eastern philosophy and yoga practices. He established the Self-Realization Fellowship in the US. He acquired a huge number of followers, and among them were many celebrities of the time.

The book also recounts his interesting encounters with many famous people, both in the spiritual and material spheres. He talks of his meetings with people like Jagadish Chandra Bose, Tagore, Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman, and Mahatma Gandhi. He also describes interesting incidents regarding many mystics and yogis that he used to meet.

Among these were the Tiger Swami, and Bhaduri Mahasaya who practiced levitation. He also met Anandamayi Ma, and a yogini named Giri Bala who had conquered hunger. He also met other spiritual masters like Sri Ramana Maharshi. Autobiography Of A Yogi (Hindi) also goes into the phenomenon of miracles and the author tries to explain these unusual occurrences in the light of science, using ideas like the energy of light and the concept of matter as the substantial form of energy.

The book is a chronicle of the life and and experiences of a very interesting man, a guru to many, and a man with a very curious mind, who liked to explore life and its many aspects.
