प्रेमचन्द (1880-1936) का जन्म बनारस के पास लमही गाँव में हुआ था। उस समय उनके पिता को बीस रुपए तनख़्वाह मिलती थी। जब वे सात साल के थे, तभी उनकी माता का स्वर्गवास हो गया। जब वे पन्द्रह साल के हुए, तब उनकी शादी कर दी गई और सोलह साल के होने पर उनके पिता का भी देहान्त हो गया। जैसाकि लोग कहते हैं—लड़कों की यह उम्र खेलने-खाने की होती है लेकिन प्रेमचन्द को तभी से घर सँभालने की चिन्ता करनी पड़ी। तब वे नवें दर्जे में पढ़ते थे और उनकी गृहस्थी में दो सौतेले भाई, सौतेली माँ और ख़ुद उनकी पत्नी थीं। स्कूली शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद अनेक प्रकार के संघर्षों से गुज़रते हुए उन्होंने 1919 में अंग्रेज़ी, फ़ारसी और इतिहास लेकर बी.ए. किया; किन्तु उर्दू में कहानी लिखना उन्होंने 1901 से ही शुरू कर दिया था। उर्दू में वह नवाब राय नाम से लिखा करते थे और 1910 में उनकी उर्दू में लिखी कहानियों का पहला संकलन ‘सोज़े वतन’ प्रकाशित हुआ। इस संकलन के ब्रिटिश सरकार द्वारा ज़ब्त कर लिए जाने पर उन्होंने नवाब राय छोड़कर प्रेमचन्द नाम से लिखना शुरू किया। ‘प्रेमचन्द’—यह प्यारा नाम उन्हें एक उर्दू लेखक और सम्पादक दयानारायन निगम ने दिया था। जलियाँवाला बाग हत्याकांड और असहयोग आन्दोलन के छिड़ने पर प्रेमचन्द ने अपनी बीस साल की नौकरी पर लात मार दी। 1930 के अवज्ञा-आन्दोलन के शुरू होते-होते उन्होंने ‘हंस’ का प्रकाशन भी आरम्भ कर दिया। प्रेमचन्द को कथा-सम्राट बनाने में जहाँ उनकी सैकड़ों कहानियों का योगदान है, वहीं ‘गोदान’, ‘सेवासदन’, ‘प्रेमाश्रम’, ‘ग़बन‘, ‘रंगभूमि’, ‘निर्मला’ आदि उपन्यास आनेवाले समय में भी उनके नाम को अमर बनाए रखेंगे।
